No Place for Slaves
The place where James' and Reuben mortal remains rest, in a single cemetery serving both negroes and whites, was made available not by the State of Oregon, nor the City of Philomath, nor even the United Brethren Church. The 2 acres that formed the Mount Union Cemetery was a donation of the former slave Reuben, donated to Philomath, with the caveat that both blacks and whites would be buried there.
